Toyota has recently introduced the mild hybrid variant of the Fortuner, which is now officially available in South Africa. This new addition to Toyota’s lineup promises improved acceleration and fuel efficiency, alongside the Hilux 48-volt mild hybrid variant that debuted a few months earlier.

Performance and Powertrain

The Fortuner Mild Hybrid is powered by the well-known 2.8L four-cylinder 1GD-FTV diesel engine, which on its own delivers a robust 204 PS and 500 Nm of peak torque.

The addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system enhances this performance to a combined output of 220 PS and 565 Nm. This system integrates a 48V battery, an electric motor/generator, and other essential components, all managed through a six-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact

While not as fuel-efficient as Toyota’s fully hybrid models like the Camry or RAV4, the Fortuner’s mild hybrid system improves fuel efficiency by about 5% and enhances engine smoothness by 6 to 10%.

This modest improvement contributes significantly to a reduced environmental footprint.

Features and Capabilities

Advanced Technology

  • The MHEV system includes an enhanced idling stop feature that offers quicker throttle response from a standstill and ensures smoother engine restarts.

Off-Road Proficiency

  • Equipped with Multi-Terrain Select, the Fortuner allows drivers to effectively handle various driving conditions. The vehicle’s ability to wade through water up to 700 mm deep is supported by a waterproof 48V battery, maintaining its prowess in challenging terrains.

Comfort and Safety

  • Inside, the Fortuner features all-LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning.

  • Technology enhancements include an HD touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, and a premium audio system with options up to an 11-speaker JBL surround sound system in higher trims.

Safety

  • The SUV is equipped with seven airbags, Toyota Safety Sense suite (which includes a range of active safety features), a 360-degree camera system, reverse parking camera, vehicle stability control, and hill start assist.
