Meteorologists attribute this extended chill to the La Niña effect, which typically causes cooler weather across many parts of the world, including India.
More Cold Days, Heavier Snowfall
According to scientists from Pantnagar University, La Niña’s influence will make this winter longer and colder. The number of cold days will increase significantly, and frequent spells of snowfall are expected in the hills. Tourists and locals may experience intense cold, but this will also boost winter tourism in destinations like Nainital and Auli.
What Is La Niña?
La Niña occurs when sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean drop about 0.5°C below normal, leading to stronger trade winds and changes in weather patterns worldwide. In India, this generally results in heavier rainfall and colder winters.
Possible Impact on Annual Weather Cycle
Experts warn that if La Niña remains strong, it could also influence the summer and monsoon patterns next year. Summers (May to July) could be slightly milder, while winters might extend further into March.
Fog and Seasonal Shifts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that La Niña’s effect will also lead to more foggy days in northern plains. Compared to previous years, fog may linger longer in regions like Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, the early spring months of March and April — normally considered pleasant — might still feel unusually cold this time.
