DelhiDesk: WhatsApp has banned 36 lakh (3.6 million) mobile connections in India in an effort to tackle scam call fraud. Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that WhatsApp has agreed to deactivate services linked to any mobile phone number engaged in fraudulent activities. The move comes after reports of a huge increase in incoming international spam calls in India, with users receiving calls from numbers with country codes belonging to Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. WhatsApp has sharpened its AI and machine learning systems to reduce fake calls, and expects to reduce the current calling rate by at least 50%.
