Varanasi District Court Grants ASI Four Weeks to Complete Survey of Gyanvapi Mosque
The Varanasi district court has granted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) four weeks to complete its survey and scientific investigation of the Gyanvapi Mosque. The court has requested the ASI to submit its report by September 2. The standing government counsel, Amit Srivastava, moved the application on behalf of the ASI.
Earlier, the ASI had requested a four-week extension for the completion of the survey and submission of the report. The survey was initiated following a request from four of the five women plaintiffs in the Rakhi Singh and others vs. UP state and others case. They are seeking permission for the worship of Shringar Gauri and other deities in the Gyanvapi compound.
The district judge had previously ordered the ASI survey on July 21 and instructed the agency to submit its report by August 4. However, the survey was temporarily halted due to an order from the Supreme Court. The survey work resumed on July 24 after the Allahabad High Court dismissed a plea against the order by the Gyanvapi mosque management committee, the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid.
The ASI’s application for an extension was based on the facts mentioned in the High Court judgment. The court has now granted the agency four weeks to complete its survey and submit the report by September 2.
