Indian Railways is gearing up to launch its latest initiative, the Vande Metro, early in 2024. Announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after the 2023 Railway Budget, this project is inspired by the Vande Bharat Express trains. The Vande Metro is specially designed to provide a rapid, air-conditioned travel option for short distances.

Key Features:

  • Design and Capacity: The Vande Metro, also known as the Mainline EMU replacement, will cater to travel distances of 250 to 300 kilometers. It is being built to accommodate a large number of passengers in a comfortable setting.

  • Operational Speed: The trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 130 km/h, making them suitable for quick commutes.

  • Facilities: Similar to the Vande Bharat trains, the Vande Metro will feature modern amenities but with some distinctions. Each coach will allow for 100 seated passengers and provisions for 200 standing passengers, accommodating more people than the traditional setup.

Development and Implementation:

Manufacturing:

The first Vande Metro train is already under construction, with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) aiming for a launch in January 2024.

Features:

The Vande Metro will incorporate all the significant features of the Vande Bharat Express, including air conditioning, automatic doors, armored gangways, and enhanced safety measures. The trains will also be equipped with contemporary, lightweight car bodies and padded seats designed for comfort.

Concept and Vision:

Replacement of MEMU:

The Vande Metro is envisioned as a replacement for the existing MEMU trains but with upgraded facilities such as air conditioning and automatic doors.

Enhanced Commuter Experience:

The focus is on enhancing the commuter experience by providing features that were not available in MEMU trains, such as improved seating and accessibility options.
