Tata Nexon EV Range Drops: User Experience Raises Concerns

An X user, Shiva Narayanan, recently shared a troubling experience with the Tata Nexon EV during a long-distance trip from Bangalore to Chennai. Despite the Nexon EV’s claimed range of 400 km, Narayanan found himself in a precarious situation.

Battery Performance Under Scrutiny

Starting his journey with 45% battery, Narayanan charged the vehicle to 80%, which indicated a range of just 170 km on the infotainment system. With 30% battery remaining, he faced a 45 km distance left to cover. Alarmingly, the battery percentage plummeted to 20%, then 10% within minutes, leading to a complete depletion with 35 km still to go.

Need for Roadside Assistance

In a desperate situation, he called Tata Emergency Services for help, which, despite reduced staffing due to Diwali festivities, managed to assist him until the battery was “reasonably charged.” The incident raises questions about the Nexon EV’s battery management, especially its failure to enter limp mode to conserve energy, a critical feature for electric vehicles.

Market Position

Despite these concerns, the Tata Nexon EV remains a top-selling electric SUV, boasting a claimed range of 489 km with a real-world range typically between 300-350 km. Tata Motors has been approached for a comment on the issue, and updates will follow.
