In a move to enhance connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, a new four-lane road is set to be constructed in five phases. This ambitious project, estimated at INR 8,660 crore, promises to not only improve transport but also drive economic growth in the region. Once completed, the road will facilitate smoother and more efficient travel for residents commuting from northern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to Patna.
Key Highlights of the Four-Lane Project
The project, managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), involves building a four-lane road and a six-lane bridge that will significantly shorten travel times and reduce traffic congestion.
- Patna to Betiah Road Construction: A new four-lane road will be built between Patna and Betiah, a route crucial for travelers from northern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The six-lane bridge over the Ganges River from Digha to Bakarpur will support both road and rail traffic, effectively creating a new travel corridor.
- Multi-Phase Execution: The 171-kilometer road will be developed in five segments. Four packages will be handled by NHAI, while MoRTH will oversee the road and bridge construction between Digha and Bakarpur. Construction has already begun on certain sections, with tenders open for additional segments like Manikpur to Sahibganj and further on to Areraj and Betiah. Bidding for these projects will close by November 26.
- Cost and Infrastructure Scope: At an estimated cost of INR 8,660 crore, the project will stretch over 171 kilometers, including the construction of a new six-lane, 4.5-kilometer bridge alongside the existing JP Setu bridge. This bridge will accommodate both road and rail traffic, relieving congestion on the current JP Setu and making travel safer and faster.
New Alignment and Upgrades to Existing Roads
The road alignment between Digha and Betiah will follow a fresh “greenfield” approach, ensuring that the route is strategically planned for minimal environmental impact and maximum efficiency. Parts of the route from Manikpur to Sahibganj will include expansions of existing roads, while certain sections will have entirely new construction, creating a balanced blend of modern infrastructure.
- Greenfield Route: The new greenfield alignment ensures a direct, uninterrupted path for travelers, particularly aiding those commuting between Patna and the northern regions.
- Upgraded Sections: The existing routes between Manikpur and Sahibganj will be widened and improved to accommodate the increased traffic, enhancing safety and reducing travel time.
Benefits of the New Road Project
Once complete, the Patna-Betiah road will bring significant convenience for residents in northern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, providing a reliable and quick route to the capital. The new bridge from Digha to Bakarpur, parallel to the JP Setu, will also ease the flow of vehicles, addressing the current bottleneck caused by the existing bridge’s limited width.
According to NHAI Regional Director YB Singh, construction on the Bakarpur-Manikpur section has already begun, with the tender process for other segments in progress. The newly developed NHW-139W route is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and foster economic growth by enhancing the movement of goods and people between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
