Tragic Stampede at Mahakumbh
A tragic incident occurred at the Sangam coast during the Mahakumbh, where 30 people lost their lives due to a stampede. Additionally, around 60 individuals were injured and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in the Kumbh area.
Government Response
In response to this unfortunate event, the Chief Minister has announced a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the families of those who died. A judicial inquiry into the incident has also been ordered to investigate the circumstances that led to the stampede.
Details of the Incident
According to officials, the stampede happened around 1-2 PM when a large crowd gathered at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. Barricades broke, leading to chaos as people began to crush one another. So far, 25 of the deceased have been identified, including four from Karnataka and one from Gujarat. Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims. A helpline number (1920) has been set up for information regarding those injured.
Appeals for Safety
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with spiritual leaders, has urged devotees to maintain discipline during the event. They have advised devotees to bathe at the nearest ghat instead of trying to reach the Sangam Nose, where the crowd was particularly dense. There are many ghats available for bathing that can accommodate the large number of visitors.
Traffic and Crowd Management
Currently, all routes to Prayagraj are closed, resulting in around 2.5 lakh vehicles being stranded and a traffic jam extending 20 kilometers.
Message from Spiritual Leaders
The Akhara Parishad President emphasized that there are over 12 crore devotees in Prayagraj, making it difficult to manage such a massive crowd. The safety of the devotees remains the top priority. Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev also shared a message, encouraging a disciplined approach and safe bathing practices given the large gathering of devotees.
