Tragic Incident Off the Mumbai Coast
On Wednesday afternoon, a devastating accident occurred when a boat capsized near the Mumbai coast, resulting in the loss of thirteen lives. This unfortunate event took place after a naval vessel collided with the passenger ship named “Neelkamal” around 3:55 PM, close to Butcher Island. As of 7:30 PM, reports indicated that 101 individuals had been rescued safely, but the tragedy claimed the lives of ten civilians and three naval personnel. The “Neelkamal” was en route to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination, when the incident unfolded.
Rescue Operations Underway
In the aftermath of the collision, immediate rescue operations were launched, involving eleven crafts and four helicopters from the Navy, Coast Guard, and local police. Two individuals sustained serious injuries and have been transported to a naval hospital for treatment. The Chief Minister addressed the media, assuring the public that more information about the remaining missing persons would be available by the next morning. The efforts of the rescue teams highlight the urgency and seriousness of the situation as they worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of all involved.
Support for Affected Families
In light of this tragedy, the Chief Minister expressed condolences and announced financial support for the families of those who lost their lives. Each bereaved family will receive an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Additionally, a thorough investigation will be conducted by both the police and the navy to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
