Bharat Mandapam: The Beauty of Indian Architecture
Bharat Mandapam, the magnificent structure built at Pragati Maidan in Delhi for the G20 Summit, has garnered global attention for its unique architecture and stunning craftsmanship. The mastermind behind its design is none other than Chakia Chandauli, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
The Visionary Architect
Tariq Mujeeb Siddiqui, the director of the project, conceptualized every aspect of Bharat Mandapam, from its walls and pillars to the convention hall and exhibition point. A graduate of Kulbhaskar Inter College, Siddiqui dedicated eight years to bring his vision to life. Designing the Bharat Mandapam in the sprawling 82-acre area of Pragati Maidan is considered the privilege of Siddiqui’s lifetime.
An International Competition
Tariq Mujeeb, the Associate Director of Arcope Associates Private Limited, shared that the National Building Construction Company of India (NBCC) organized an international-level competition for the Bharat Mandapam project. The competition aimed to redevelop Pragati Maidan and create an exhibition center and convention hall for future G-20 summits. Eight renowned global companies participated, with the condition of partnering with an Indian company. Tariq’s company, M/s Arcop Associates, collaborated with Aedas Singapore for the competition.
Challenges and Inspiration
Tariq and his team faced several challenges in designing the Bharat Mandapam, primarily because it was the first time such an event was being organized in India. To gather inspiration and insights, they visited previous G-20 summit venues. With a team of 15 architects, including his colleague Sanjay Singh, Tariq meticulously crafted the Bharat Mandapam to showcase India’s rich culture and heritage to the world.
