Supreme Court extends interim bail of Satyendar Jain till September 1 in money laundering case

The Supreme Court has granted an extension of interim bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendar Jain, who is also a former cabinet minister in the Delhi government, in a money laundering case on medical grounds. The bail has been extended till September 1.

The bench of Justice AS Bopanna and Justice MM Sundresh extended the bail after considering Jain’s medical report. The interim bail was initially granted on May 26, and it was extended by five weeks on July 24.

However, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), strongly opposed the extension of the interim bail.

Jain’s counsel, senior advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, informed the court that Jain is currently recovering from a spinal operation.

The ED had arrested Jain on May 30 last year on charges of money laundering through four companies allegedly linked to him. He was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PMLA) following a CBI FIR registered against him in 2017. Jain was later granted regular bail by the trial court on September 6, 2019, in the case registered by the CBI.

Opposition from the ED

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, strongly opposed the extension of Satyendar Jain’s interim bail. Raju insisted that Jain should surrender and be treated like a normal prisoner. He argued that there is no need for medical bail and that extending the interim bail even for a day is not appropriate. Raju also requested the court to consider an application for an independent inquiry by AIIMS.
