Millions of devotees across India are celebrating Sharad Purnima today, one of the most significant full moon festivals in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Krishna, and the Moon God.
The Purnima Tithi began at 12:23 PM today and will conclude at 9:16 AM on October 7, providing devotees with the optimal timeframe for religious observances and rituals. This auspicious day falls on the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashwin, marking the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the winter months.
According to Hindu scriptures, Sharad Purnima holds special significance as the moon shines with all sixteen Kalas (divine attributes) on this night, representing complete divine energy and prosperity. The moonlight is believed to be filled with ‘amrit tattva’ (nectar element), possessing healing and spiritual properties.
The most prominent tradition involves preparing kheer (rice pudding) under direct moonlight. Devotees place bowls of freshly prepared kheer outside their homes throughout the night, allowing the moon’s rays to bless the offering. This moon-blessed kheer is consumed the following morning, believed to promote good health, spiritual purity, and divine blessings.
Religious celebrations include elaborate Lakshmi puja ceremonies, with devotees decorating their homes with diyas (oil lamps), rangoli patterns, and marigold flowers. Temples across the country are conducting special prayers and bhajan sessions, drawing large crowds of faithful participants.
The festival also commemorates Lord Krishna’s divine Raas Leela with the gopis in Vrindavan, making it particularly significant for Krishna devotees. Traditional cultural programs featuring classical music and dance performances are being organized in various cities.
