Most states across the country are currently experiencing severe cold weather. The cold wave is particularly intense in the northern regions of India, where dense fog is making conditions even more challenging. Today, places like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh are facing thick fog, and residents in the Delhi-NCR area are feeling the chill as well. It seems like winter has really settled in, affecting daily life and travel plans.
Weather Changes on the Horizon
The Indian Meteorological Department has announced that there will be a change in weather starting from January 14. A western disturbance is becoming active over Punjab, which could bring rain to more than 15 states between January 14 and 16.
This weather pattern might also lead to dense fog in certain areas and even snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Just recently, those regions experienced snowfall along with icy winds, making it a winter wonderland but also a bit treacherous for travel.
Hazards and Alerts to Keep in Mind
As the weather continues to shift, the Meteorological Department has issued alerts for rain and hail in various states. The western disturbance is expected to cause sporadic to heavy rain and snowfall in parts of North-West and Central India. There’s even a chance of storms with lightning in isolated areas of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Meanwhile, dense fog is forecasted to linger in several northern states until January 16. Fishermen are also advised to stay clear of beaches near South Sri Lanka and the Gulf of Mannar due to the adverse weather conditions.
