Delhi Government Encourages Scrapping of Old Vehicles

The Delhi government has announced a new initiative to encourage the scrapping of old vehicles in an effort to reduce pollution. Residents of Delhi who own a 15-year-old petrol car or a 10-year-old diesel car will be eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs 50,000 in road tax on new vehicles with better emission standards.

The Transport Department has prepared a draft for scrapping vehicles, which will soon be presented to the public for suggestions and then sent to the Finance Department for approval.

Background and Current Situation

Many old vehicles in Delhi are still polluting the environment, prompting the Transport Department to confiscate and send them to scrapyards. However, this practice was halted by the Delhi High Court’s decision.

To address this issue, the government has prepared a policy to encourage the scrapping of old vehicles. According to the policy, no petrol vehicle older than 15 years and no diesel vehicle older than 10 years is allowed to operate in the National Capital Region.

The government has canceled the registration of approximately 55 lakh vehicles in the capital, but only 1.4 lakh vehicles have been scrapped so far.

How to Benefit from the Initiative

Individuals who wish to benefit from the initiative must scrap their old vehicles and obtain a “deposit certificate.” This certificate must be attached to the registration papers when purchasing a new vehicle to avail of the exemption in road tax. The certificate will remain valid for a specified period.

The government is encouraging people to sell their old vehicles and purchase new ones to reduce air pollution. Different slabs of discount may be prepared for commercial and private vehicles, and the Finance Department will approve the expenditure of public money in the form of subsidies.
