Increase in Instances of Heavy Rainfall in Delhi during Monsoon

In the past three years, Delhi has experienced a rise in the number of heavy and very heavy rainfall events during the monsoon season, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This increase in heavy rain events has led to widespread waterlogging and disruptions in the city.

Last year, Delhi recorded 16 instances of heavy rainfall and one instance of very heavy rainfall between June and September. This year, the city has already witnessed seven instances of heavy rainfall and six instances of very heavy rain. On July 9, eight observatories in Delhi, including Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, and Mayur Vihar, reported heavy and very heavy rainfall.

The highest number of heavy rainfall events was recorded in 2021, with 41 instances, followed by 2022 with 16 instances. Similarly, 2021 also saw the highest number of very heavy rainfall events, with 10 instances. These heavy rain events have caused significant disruptions in the city, leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion.

The increase in heavy rain events can be attributed to various factors, including climate change and urbanization. Climate change has led to more intense and frequent rainfall events, while rapid urbanization in Delhi has resulted in the loss of natural drainage systems, exacerbating the problem of waterlogging.

The Delhi government has been taking measures to address the issue of waterlogging, including the construction of new stormwater drains and the desilting of existing drains. However, these measures have not been sufficient to prevent waterlogging during heavy rain events.

It is crucial for the authorities to further invest in infrastructure and drainage systems to mitigate the impact of heavy rain events in the future. Additionally, there is a need for better urban planning and sustainable development practices to minimize the risks associated with heavy rainfall in Delhi.
