**Supreme Court stays Gujarat High Court order, grants interim protection to Teesta Setalvad**

– The Supreme Court has granted interim protection to Mumbai-based activist Teesta Setalvad, staying the Gujarat High Court’s order of her “immediate surrender” in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots case.
– Setalvad has been given protection from arrest for a week, as the apex court questioned the “urgency” of her surrender, considering she is already out on interim bail.
– A two-judge bench had earlier referred the matter to a larger bench, stating that Setalvad should have been given some time before surrendering.
– The apex court had previously granted interim bail to Setalvad, who was accused of fabricating evidence and tutoring witnesses in the 2002 riots case.
– Setalvad had approached the Gujarat High Court for regular bail, which was rejected, leading to the court’s directive for her immediate surrender.

**Background of the case**

– Teesta Setalvad and former IPS officer RB Sreekumar were arrested on June 25 last year for allegedly fabricating evidence, committing forgery, and criminal conspiracy related to framing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others.
– The arrest came after an FIR filed by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch regarding a conspiracy to falsely implicate innocent individuals in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
– During the court hearing, the state government claimed that Setalvad received ₹30 lakh from late Congress leader Ahmed Patel with the aim of destabilizing the Narendra Modi-led government in Gujarat after the riots.
– The state government labeled Setalvad as a “tool” of a politician tasked with defaming Gujarat.
