Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motor Corporation partner to develop a flying electric car
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturer, has teamed up with Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) to create a flying electric car. The collaboration is with the Japanese startup, Skydrive, and the vehicle is expected to be called Skydrive.
This electric air copter, which is larger than a flying car drone but smaller than a traditional helicopter, will have the capacity to carry three passengers in addition to the pilot. It is intended to be used as an electric flying taxi service in urban areas.
Manufacturing plans for the flying car in India
Maruti Suzuki is considering manufacturing the flying car in India for economic reasons. The company is in discussions with the officials of the aircraft regulator, DGCA, to explore the possibility of producing the vehicle in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The aim is to lower the price of the flying car for the Indian market.
Launch plans at the 2025 Osaka Expo
The flying car, equipped with 12 motors and rotors, is expected to be launched at the 2025 Osaka Expo in Japan. Initially, it will be available in Japan and the United States, with plans to expand sales to India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Maruti Suzuki is currently conducting market research to identify potential Indian consumers and partners.
Advantages of the electric air copter
The electric air copter is expected to weigh about half the weight of a conventional helicopter, making it suitable for take-off and landing on the roofs of buildings. Additionally, the electrification of the vehicle has significantly reduced the number of aircraft parts, resulting in lower production and maintenance costs.
