From now on, all calls and messages from banks will only come from 6-digit numbers. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced this new initiative to protect customers from cyber fraud.
What’s Changing?
- Until now, banks like SBI and PNB used different numbers for calls and messages.
- Cybercriminals often misused these numbers to send fake messages or make fraudulent calls, creating confusion among customers.
- With this 6-digit standard, it will now be easier to identify genuine calls and messages from banks.
RBI’s Other Initiatives:
- UPI Transaction Limit Increased:
- The limit for UPI transactions for hospitals and educational institutions has been raised to ₹5 lakh.
- Alongside promoting UPI use, RBI is also working on controlling cyber fraud.
- Focus on Customer Awareness:
- Beware of phishing emails, QR code fraud, and fake calls.
- Keep your phone software updated and never share passwords with anyone.
- Use strong, complex passwords.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible.
- Be cautious when using screen-sharing apps.
What to Do if You Face Cyber Fraud?
If you fall victim to cyber fraud, immediately report it on the helpline number 1930.
Why Is This Important?
- The 6-digit number standard will help customers easily identify genuine bank communications.
- It’s also expected to reduce misuse of numbers by cybercriminals.
RBI’s initiative is a big step towards safer banking. Stay alert and avoid responding to unknown calls or messages.
