The month of October is often referred to as the “Month of Cyclones” in meteorological terms. According to the Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, weather patterns in the Bay of Bengal are currently showing signs of potential cyclonic activity. He stated that a low-pressure system is expected to form on October 21, which could develop into a cyclonic storm.
Current Rainfall Situation
Peninsular India is experiencing continuous rainfall, particularly in coastal areas. The affected regions include Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, coastal and interior Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and parts of Gujarat. The rainfall intensity is expected to increase over the next 2 to 4 days.
Rainfall Statistics and Alerts
On Saturday, the highest rainfall was recorded in Tamil Nadu and Odisha, where up to 170 mm of rainfall was noted. The IMD has also issued alerts for Sunday, indicating heavy rainfall in multiple regions. A Yellow Alert has been declared for areas including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Konkan, and Gujarat, while Tamil Nadu is under an Orange Alert due to expected severe rainfall.
Cyclonic Activity in the Bay of Bengal
The IMD has reported that a cyclonic weather system is forming in the central Bay of Bengal, which could bring heavy downpours along the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts. A new low-pressure system is expected to form around October 21 in the Bay of Bengal, which could lead to intense rainfall in peninsular India between October 24 and 25.
October: The “Month of Cyclones”
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra highlighted that October is notorious for cyclonic activities, especially in the Bay of Bengal region. Though it is early to predict a full-fledged cyclone, dangerous sea activities are anticipated between October 22 and 23, which could result in heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and even parts of Bangladesh. Heavy rain is also predicted in Odisha from October 23 to 25.
Worsening Air Quality in Delhi
Meanwhile, in Delhi, the changing weather is causing a deterioration in air quality. On Saturday, the AQI (Air Quality Index) at various stations crossed 300, indicating hazardous levels of pollution. As winter approaches, smog has begun to settle over the city, making breathing conditions worse. The Delhi government is working hard to mitigate the situation, with IMD predicting the onset of colder weather by October 27.
