In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Transport Department in Patna has initiated a rigorous campaign mandating the use of reflective tapes on commercial vehicles. This initiative is part of the National Road Safety Month and aims to significantly reduce road accidents, especially during foggy conditions.
Key Aspects of the Campaign
Mandatory Reflective Tapes
All commercial vehicles, including pickup vans, tractors, and autos, are required to have reflective tapes. These tapes are crucial for increasing vehicle visibility, particularly in low-light conditions and fog, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
Fines for Non-Compliance
The authorities have made it clear that a failure to adhere to this rule will result in fines. This strict enforcement is expected to ensure widespread compliance.
Awareness and Special Inspection Drives
Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal has directed district transport officers, motor vehicle inspectors, and enforcement sub-inspectors to conduct awareness and special inspection drives. This proactive approach is aimed at educating vehicle owners about the importance of reflective tapes.
Statistics Highlighting the Need
The urgency of this measure is underscored by the alarming statistics from 2022, which saw 2,275 road accidents due to fog, resulting in 1,842 fatalities and 1,449 injuries. These numbers highlight the critical need for preventive measures like the installation of reflective tapes.
Additional Safety Instructions
Apart from the reflective tape mandate, the campaign also focuses on broader safety measures. Vehicle operators are advised against parking in the middle of the road, especially during foggy conditions. They are urged to maintain moderate speeds, avoid using mobile phones while driving, refrain from overtaking near narrow bridges, and avoid driving when drowsy.
