Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has emphasized the importance of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme in promoting development and providing employment opportunities in rural areas. Here are the key highlights from his recent meeting:

• The MNREGA scheme expands the security of livelihood by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed employment to every household in every financial year.

• The state government will increase the budget of this important scheme to Rs 2000 crore.

• There are 11.53 lakh active job cards with 14.86 lakh active workers in the state.

• The state government would make concerted efforts to include the works of laying underground pipelines in the approved list to speed up the works related to irrigation, water supply and sanitation.

• The state government will also appeal to the Government of India to provide corpus fund under this scheme.
