Pakistan army takes action against officers involved in May 9 protests

The Pakistan army has sacked three officers, including a lieutenant-general, and initiated disciplinary proceedings against 10 others, including three major generals and seven brigadiers, in relation to the events of May 9. On that day, military installations were targeted by protesters following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in an alleged graft case. The army spokesperson, Maj Gen Ahmed Sharif, said the military had completed its “self-accountability process” and that the families of “martyrs” and all ranks of the army had serious concerns over the desecration of monuments of martyrs in many parts of the country during the riots. Sharif added that the army was currently conducting the trial of 102 suspects under the Army Act of those suspected of involvement in the May 9 violence.

Imran Khan, who had been arrested prior to the protests, has condemned the attacks on military installations and desecration of army monuments, but described the events as a ploy by his opponents to break his party and disqualify him from electoral politics. He claimed that hundreds of his supporters, including women and students, were “illegally” behind bars. Dozens of senior politicians from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party have publicly announced their separation from him and his party, with some forming a new political party, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, with the backing of the country’s powerful military establishment. The Supreme Court is currently hearing a case filed by several petitioners, including Khan, against the trial of civilians in military courts.
