Delhi’s Old Fort, Purana Quila, is a treasure trove of history and archeology. Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has found evidence of nine civilizations dating back 2500 years in the excavation of the fort. The evidence includes artifacts and remains from the Maurya, Sunga, Gupta, Rajput, Sultan, Mughal periods, and more.

To showcase these findings, a glass shed will be built in Purana Qila to preserve and protect the remains excavated so far. The site will be showcased as an open-air site museum, where visitors can see the excavation directly. The excavation has yielded many interesting findings, including gray pottery, Vaikunth Vishnu, Gajalakshmi idol, and drains.

The ASI team has been conducting excavations at Purana Quila since 1954. They have found evidence of cultures related to the Maurya period, Sunga period, Kushan period, Gupta period, Later Gupta period, Rajput period, Sultanate period, and Mughal period. Pieces of brown pottery, painted black, were also found here.

In the field of archeology, painted gray pottery is considered to be an important find. Its antiquity has been determined to be before 1200 AD. This discovery suggests that Delhi was a major center of the Painted Gray Ware culture in ancient times. During the excavation in the year 2017-18, many things related to the Maurya period and earlier were found. It contained bangles, coins, drains for water drainage, and other items, which were 2500 years old. Apart from this, the idol of Gaj Lakshmi of terracotta, Lord Vinayak, different Rajmudra, 136 coins and human bones have been found.

Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy has expressed his hope that more new information will be found in the excavation in the coming times under the leadership of senior ASI officer Vasant Swarnakar. The visitors will get to see the things found in the excavation in this open-air site museum.
