The dream of flying over congested city roads might soon become a reality with the upcoming Air Taxi service in major metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given the green light to the Vertiport Rules, which are essential for the operation of air taxis. It is anticipated that air taxis could start flying in India by 2026.
Air Taxi Launch with Vertiport Rules
According to DGCA, Vertiports will be designed for these air taxis, enabling vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). These vertiports will function similarly to airports and will be equipped with the necessary infrastructure to handle air taxis.
IndiGo Partners with Archer Aviation for 200 Midnight Aircraft
India’s leading airline, IndiGo, through its parent company InterGlobe Enterprises, has taken the first step toward launching air taxis by signing a deal with Archer Aviation, a California-based electric air taxi manufacturer. IndiGo has committed $1 billion to acquire 200 Midnight aircraft from Archer Aviation.
Air Taxi to Launch in Delhi First, Followed by Mumbai
As per DGCA, extensive consultations with all stakeholders have been conducted to create comprehensive guidelines for vertiport infrastructure, operational guidelines for air taxis, battery charging, parking, landing, and emergency response. Once these guidelines are met, vertiports will receive clearance. According to a Times of India report, the first air taxi service is expected to launch in Delhi, followed by other major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
With this, India is set to witness a new era in urban transportation, offering faster and more efficient travel across major cities.
