Lucknow/Noida: Greater Noida Authority Ordered to Pay Rs 10 Lakh Compensation by Consumer Commission
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has imposed a compensation of Rs 10 lakh on the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority. Commission Chairman Justice Ashok Kumar ordered the authority to pay Rs 50,000 as litigation expenses along with this amount to Noida resident Sonali Methi.
Allotment Cum Allocation Letter Issue
Greater Noida Authority had issued an allotment cum allocation letter to Sonali Methi on 11 February 2011. In this letter, the area of the flat was shown as 120 square meters. Sonali had paid Rs 3 lakh 90 thousand at the time of registration and was supposed to deposit Rs 34 lakh seven thousand with a two percent discount. The remaining payment was to be made before May 12, 2011, with a 12 percent annual interest.
Additional Charges Imposed
The total price of the flat was Rs 17 lakh 97 thousand 460. However, the authority issued a letter to Sonali asking her to deposit the location and water/sewer charges, and stated that the sale deed would be edited. Sonali Methi deposited the total cost of the flat, including interest, amounting to Rs 37 lakh 97 thousand 500. The authority also issued a letter confirming this. But on August 22, 2016, the authority demanded an additional amount of more than Rs 9 lakh 66 thousand.
Consumer Complaint and Commission’s Verdict
Sonali Methi lodged a complaint with the Consumer Commission regarding the additional charges imposed by the authority. The Commission, after considering the case, ordered the authority to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to Sonali Methi for the physical and mental suffering caused. Additionally, the authority was also directed to pay Rs 50,000 as case expenses. The demand of Rs 9.66 lakh sent by the authority was cancelled.
This verdict by the Consumer Commission serves as a reminder to authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in their dealings with consumers. It also highlights the importance of protecting consumer rights and holding authorities accountable for any wrongful actions.
