New Tenant Verification Proposal in Noida Society
The Apartment Owners Association (AOA) of a Noida society near Delhi is introducing a new tenant verification policy for unmarried individuals. This decision follows the recent tragic incident involving a 23-year-old law student, who died under distressing circumstances in the building.
In an email sent to flat owners, the AOA Chairman VN Subramaniam stated that unmarried tenants must provide a consent letter from their family members. For couples living together, either a marriage certificate or a similar consent letter is required from their parents.
The email addressed the unfortunate event that took place on the 7th floor, highlighting the board’s priority for safety within the society. It emphasized that owners renting flats to unmarried individuals must ensure that detailed information and approval from family members are obtained. Furthermore, if unmarried tenants are living with members of the opposite sex, they must present either a marriage certificate or a formal acceptance letter from their families.
The law student was attending a party in their flat when they jumped from the balcony on January 11. Following this incident, a case of abetment of suicide was filed against a female classmate, who has since been released on bail. This incident has sparked broader discussions about tenant verification processes and safety measures in residential areas.
However, the proposal has led to disagreements among residents and AOA board members. AOA Secretary SS Kushwaha clarified that the email was sent without the board’s approval, stating it reflected the Chairman’s personal views. He mentioned that the board members do not support the content of the email and believe there are more effective ways to address the situation.
