New highways and expressways are being constructed in the country. Besides, the toll tax imposed on these is also gradually increasing. Often people want to cross the toll booth without paying toll tax (toll tax latest updates). This may be true.

According to an old tweet of NHAI, in a special situation the driver can move ahead without paying toll tax. According to NHAI, if the line of vehicles from the toll booth becomes more than 100 meters long, then the vehicles will be removed from there without payment so that the line can be shortened.

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clarified that under certain circumstances, vehicles can pass through a toll booth without paying the toll tax.
  • If the vehicle queue extends beyond 100 meters at the toll booth, the toll is waived to reduce congestion.

  • The maximum processing time for payment is 10 seconds per vehicle.
  • During peak hours, if the queue exceeds 100 meters, vehicles are allowed to pass for free.
  • Once the queue shortens within the 100-meter mark, toll collection resumes.

The 60-Kilometer Rule:

  • According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) guidelines from 2008, the minimum distance between two toll plazas on any highway should be 60 kilometers.

  • Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, confirmed this objective.
  • However, due to land limitations, traffic congestion, and other factors, two toll plazas might exist within a 60-kilometer range.

Difference Between Toll Tax and Road Tax:

  • Road Tax: Collected by the RTO (Regional Transport Office) to allow drivers to use various roads within the state.

  • Toll Tax: Charged specifically for using a designated road, usually highways or expressways.
  • Toll tax does not go to any one state’s government but is collected by the entity responsible for constructing that highway or by NHAI directly.
