In today’s India, it’s hard to find a city where you don’t have to pay toll tax while traveling. With the rapid increase in vehicles and expressways, the number of toll plazas is also on the rise.

You’ve probably paid toll tax multiple times, but did you know there are two specific rules that allow you to pass through toll plazas for free? The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) guarantees it.

NHAI’s 2021 Relief Order

On May 26, 2021, NHAI issued an order providing significant relief and rights to drivers. This order highlighted two specific rules related to tolls, which enable drivers to pass through toll plazas without paying. NHAI also mentioned that if drivers face any issues with this facility, they can call their toll-free number.

Rule 1: The 100-Meter Mark

Three years ago, NHAI released a rule concerning vehicle passage without paying toll tax. According to this rule, if there’s a long queue at the toll plaza and your vehicle is parked 100 meters or more away from the plaza, you don’t have to pay the toll.

Each toll plaza has a yellow line marking the 100-meter distance. If your vehicle is beyond this line, you can pass without paying.

Rule 2: The 10-Second Rule

Another rule issued by NHAI states that you shouldn’t have to wait for more than 10 seconds at the toll plaza to pass through for free. If you have to wait longer than 10 seconds, you can pass without paying the toll. NHAI has also stated that if you experience a wait longer than the stipulated time, you can contact their helpline at 1033.

Implementation Challenges

While NHAI has issued these rules and guidelines, utilizing this facility remains a significant challenge for the common man and drivers. The primary reason is that most toll plazas in the country are operated by private companies, and their staff often lack awareness of these policies.

There have been numerous incidents where toll plaza employees have resorted to violence against drivers who attempted to exercise these rights. In such situations, NHAI needs to issue clear instructions to toll plaza staff to enforce these policies effectively.
