Indian Railways, often termed the lifeline of the nation, plays a crucial role in connecting the vast population for employment, business, and social purposes. However, train delays often result in passengers waiting for hours at stations.
Addressing this issue, the railway has established restrooms (waiting halls) for passenger convenience. Recently, this facility has been managed through the private sector at some stations in Delhi, requiring a specified fee. This article will detail the cost of using these restrooms and the facilities included.
Every railway station offers waiting room facilities. These rooms are available for passengers with confirmed tickets in AC first, second, and third tier classes. Previously, this facility was free, but now a charge of ₹10 per hour is applicable. According to Dinesh Kumar, the waiting room operator, this paid system was initiated three years ago when the government handed over the tender to the private sector.
This arrangement is implemented at Nizamuddin, New Delhi, and Old Delhi railway stations. Kumar mentioned that passengers are charged ₹10 per hour, based on their ticket’s PNR number and mobile number.
Facilities in the Waiting Room
Dinesh Kumar explained that earlier, waiting rooms didn’t have canteen facilities, forcing people to go outside for tea or snacks. However, since the tender was given to the private sector, a canteen has been set up near the waiting room.
Here, passengers can find various food and beverage items at railway-friendly prices. The waiting rooms are also equipped with clean washrooms, focusing on hygiene.
For the convenience of passengers, a large screen is installed in the room, displaying timely information about all trains.
This new arrangement at Delhi’s railway stations is a step towards enhancing passenger comfort and convenience, ensuring a pleasant wait during train delays.
