In a rare but welcome break from the punishing heat of North India’s summer, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that this May, temperatures in Delhi-NCR and surrounding regions will remain significantly below average. With the mercury dipping by nearly 2.5°C from the seasonal norm, the intense heat typically felt in the capital around this time seems to be on hold.

According to weather experts, a combination of moist air and intermittent cloud cover has led to a noticeably cooler climate, making May more bearable than usual. This shift in weather comes as a relief for residents who have been dreading the usual sweltering conditions.

Temperature Unlikely to Cross 40°C Mark in Most Areas; No Severe Heatwave in Sight

The IMD report indicates that for the next four to five days, most parts of Delhi are unlikely to experience temperatures exceeding 40°C. On Monday, many localities in the capital recorded maximum temperatures well below the red-zone mark. Safdarjung, for example, logged a maximum temperature of just 35.1°C, significantly lower than the average of 37.5°C for this time of year.

Minimum temperatures have also seen a drop, with nighttime mercury settling around 25.2°C — 1.4°C lower than the seasonal norm. Similar patterns were observed across other key weather monitoring stations.

No Need for Air Conditioning: Coolers Prove Sufficient, Offering Electricity Bill Relief to Households

In a surprising turn of events, many Delhi-NCR residents are managing to stay cool without the use of energy-hungry air conditioners. Thanks to the combination of lower temperatures and increased moisture, air coolers are proving more than adequate for maintaining indoor comfort.

This natural moderation in temperature is also expected to bring some relief to household electricity bills, which typically spike during summer months due to heavy AC usage. With fans and coolers doing the job effectively this year, families can look forward to a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly summer.

Possibility of Thunderstorms After May 30

The IMD has also hinted at the possibility of dust storms and light rain returning to the region after May 30. Temperatures are expected to hover between 36°C and 38°C during the mid-week, with western disturbances likely to trigger mild storms across parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi NCR.
