The Telecom Department released a notification detailing the upcoming changes in SIM card purchase regulations. Starting 1st January 2024, it will be mandatory for all customers to complete e-KYC, completely phasing out the paper-based KYC.
This rule aligns with the government’s vision of a digitally empowered society and reflects the growing trend of digital integration in administrative processes.
🔍 Other Regulations Remain Unchanged 📊
It is important to note that apart from the e-KYC implementation, all other existing rules regarding mobile connection acquisition will remain unchanged. Previously, customers had the option to complete either e-KYC or paper-based KYC, but the latter will no longer be available after the specified date.
🗓️ Changes Effective from December 2023 🔄
Prior to this major update, the Telecom Ministry had already introduced a rule change effective from 1st December 2023. This rule limits the number of SIM cards that can be issued under one ID, ensuring better regulation and monitoring of mobile connections.
Additionally, both the seller and the buyer of the SIM card are required to be registered, and anyone purchasing multiple SIM cards at once must do so through a business connection.
