Residents of Delhi-NCR have a reason to cheer with the latest development in urban transportation. The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a 16,000-crore INR rapid rail corridor that promises to significantly reduce travel time between Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) and Noida Airport to just 80 minutes.
Key Aspects of the New Rapid Rail Corridor
- Significant Time Reduction: This ambitious project will bring down the travel time to 1 hour and 20 minutes, offering a swift and efficient transit option for people traveling between these two major airports.
- Project Details and Development: The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is in charge of developing the detailed project report for this corridor. The report, according to The Economic Times, is expected to be completed by March. Shailendra Bhatia, the Nodal Officer of Noida International Airport Limited, suggests that the project is likely to be completed within four years of its commencement.
- Improving Delhi’s Connectivity: This new rapid rail corridor will not only connect the two airports but will also integrate other parts of Delhi, enhancing the overall connectivity in the region.
- Strategic Linkages: The Noida Airport link will pass through Ghaziabad station, which serves as one of the interchange stations for the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Transport. This link will provide passengers access to the under-construction Delhi-Alwar Rapid Rail, expected to be operational by mid-2025.
- Stations and Routes: The proposed project will include a station at Indira Gandhi International Airport and Aerocity, facilitating smoother travel for passengers. The corridor is expected to be a game-changer for the region, reducing the current travel challenges significantly.
- Airport Operations and Collaborations: While Delhi Airport is operated by the GMR Group, the Zurich Airport has been assigned the responsibility of operating the Noida Airport. This year, the Noida Airport is set to see its first flight, with agreements already in place with IndiGo and Akasa Air.
The approval of the rapid rail corridor between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Noida Airport is a landmark step in transforming the urban commute in the Delhi-NCR region. This project is poised to not only enhance connectivity but also ease passenger traffic at both airports. With this development, the Delhi-NCR region is set to witness a significant boost in its infrastructure, making travel more efficient and less time-consuming for millions of passengers.
