Delhi University (DU) is set to introduce three new self-financed B.Tech programs from the academic session 2023-24, which will be heavy on the pockets of students. The fee for each course has been fixed at Rs 2.16 lakh per annum, making it one of the most expensive courses in DU. The Executive Council approved the fee structure on Friday, but members also protested against the high fees, stating that it would make B.Tech education unaffordable for many students.

The three new courses, B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, and B.Tech Electrical Engineering, were approved by the Academic Council before receiving the nod from the Executive Council. Due to the separation of NSIT and Delhi College of Engineering becoming separate universities, DU currently does not have technology programs. The university aims to fill this gap by introducing these new courses.

However, many teachers and council members are raising questions on the high fees being charged. Executive Council Rajpal Panwar stated that in the meeting of the Executive Council, objections were raised regarding the fees, but the university still approved it. The decision seems to indicate that the university is being privatised. The high fees will be a burden for students, especially those from poor backgrounds who wish to study B.Tech at DU.

Generally, the average fee for doing BA, B.Com, or B.Sc in DU is 12-15 thousand per year, making the fees for B.Tech in lakhs a significant financial burden. The university should consider the impact of such high fees on students and explore ways to make education more accessible and affordable.

In conclusion, while the introduction of new B.Tech courses is a welcome move, the high fees associated with them may make them unaffordable for many students. The university should take steps to address this issue and ensure that education remains accessible to all.
