Munger, Bihar: A long-awaited aviation dream for Munger district might finally become reality, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to conduct a site visit to the Safiabd airstrip between May 22 and May 27. The visit is aimed at assessing the feasibility of commencing commercial air services from the site, a move that could significantly enhance regional connectivity and economic prospects.
A Hub of Yoga, Railways, and Culture
Munger, widely known as the international capital of yoga, holds immense historical and cultural significance. It is home to iconic landmarks such as the Jamalpur Railway Workshop, Sitakund, Chandika Sthan temple, and the birthplace of spiritual leader Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar. With a blend of industrial presence — including establishments like ITC — Munger has long deserved improved transportation infrastructure.
Plans for 19-Seater Aircraft, Runway Readiness in Focus
The Bihar government is working toward launching air services using 19-seater small aircraft. Currently, the airstrip has a runway length of 800 metres — sufficient for smaller aircraft, though short of the 1,200 metres needed for larger planes. The state has already invested approximately ₹8 crore in developing the runway and passenger lounge. Although Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had previously inaugurated the airstrip, flights could not commence due to technical and safety constraints.
Neglect Turns Airstrip into Grazing Ground
At present, the Safiabd airstrip lies in a state of neglect. It has essentially become a grazing ground and public park where locals learn driving, walk, and let cattle roam freely. The boundary wall is broken in many sections, and there is no security presence, making it vulnerable to encroachment and misuse.
Pre-Visit Checklist for Local Administration
Ahead of the AAI team’s inspection, district authorities are expected to prioritize the following tasks:
-
Repairing the boundary wall
-
Deployment of security personnel
-
Removal of encroachments
-
Cleaning and refurbishment of the terminal building
Experts Weigh In
Experts believe that if operational by 2025 — the state’s tentative target — the Safiabd airport could unlock new potential for tourism, local industries, and healthcare access in the region. Not only would it provide direct air connectivity to one of Bihar’s culturally rich districts, but it could also generate employment and put Munger firmly on the aviation map of India.
