What’s inside:

This article discusses the completion of a tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project and its future plans.

The excavation of a 4.88 km long tunnel between Shilfata and Ghansoli for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was finished on Saturday morning. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was present during this event and called it a significant achievement.

Vaishnav announced that the first phase of the high-speed rail corridor on the Surat-Bileimora section is set to start in December 2027. He explained that while Google Maps shows it takes nine hours to travel from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, the bullet train will complete the journey in just two hours and seven minutes.

For commuters, there will be no need to book tickets in advance for the Mumbai to Ahmedabad route. Passengers can purchase tickets directly at the station. The plan includes a schedule where trains will run every half hour during peak morning and evening times, and later, every ten minutes.

The tunnel was created using the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM), and it is part of a larger 21 km underground section. This includes a 7 km stretch under Thane Creek, making it an essential part of India’s first bullet train project, which spans a total distance of 508 km.

The completion of this tunnel marks a big step toward the bullet train’s operation. The next phases will expand the service to Thane in 2028 and to Bandra Kurla Complex in 2029, further enhancing connectivity in the region.

  • The tunnel for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is now complete.

  • The first phase will start in December 2027.

  • Bullet train will reduce travel time to just over two hours.

  • No advance ticket bookings required; tickets can be bought at the station.
