GHAZIABAD: A 36-year-old woman and her three-year-old son had a close shave after the lift they had boarded had a free fall from the eighth floor to the basement at Prateek Grand Society in Siddharth Vihar on Saturday.

★The woman, Gurpreet Kaur, tried to open the door after the lift landed, but could not. The alarms did not work either. The lift then automatically went up two storeys to the ground floor and the door opened on its own.

★Although none of them suffered injuries, the incident left the mother-son duo deeply traumatised.

★Gurpreet and Nirmit had boarded the lift to go to the 16th floor from the ground. Two other residents who were in the lift with them got off on the eighth floor. The door closed and the lift developed a snag.

★Akash Deep Sharma, Gurpreet’s husband, said that the lift had a free fall from the eighth floor to the basement. His wife tried to press the alarm buttons, but none were working.

★Trapped, the two screamed to be saved, but no one heard them in the basement. After around 15 minutes, the lift moved up on its own and stopped on the ground floor. The door opened and the two came out.

★Akash questioned the maintenance agency’s efforts to look into the functioning of lifts. He added that his wife and son did not suffer injuries, but they are traumatised.

★Residents said the company’s officials had told them the malfunction occurred because of severe voltage fluctuation. They, however, could not say why the alarms didn’t work.

★Prateek Grand has around 2,400 flats and 2,000 families living in them. It has 29 floors in each of its 24 towers.
