Heads up, commuters! The Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) is set for a major closure. Police have announced that nearly the entire Ghaziabad section will be shut down from the night of July 28th.
This closure, lasting at least five days, aims to facilitate the kanwar yatra pilgrimage, but it might cause significant traffic issues for those traveling to and from Delhi. All six lanes from UP Gate on the Delhi border to the Kashi toll plaza near Meerut will be closed. However, the nearby NH-9 lanes will remain open.
Alternate Routes to the Rescue
If you’re planning to travel during this period, take note: Police have a diversion plan in place. Last year, similar measures led to gridlock on NH-9 as traffic was redirected from the DME.
This time, most vehicles will be rerouted via the Noida Expressway, DND Flyway, and Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra assures that a comprehensive traffic diversion plan is in the works.
Routes for Pilgrims
For those participating in the Kanwar Yatra, there are three main routes in Ghaziabad that pilgrims from Delhi and neighboring UP districts use to reach Haridwar.
The Pipeline Road, connecting Loni Border to Niwari, is favored by those who walk the yatra. Most Dak Kanwariyas, who run the distance barefoot and are followed by relay teams in trucks or bikes, prefer the DME. Additionally, NH-34 via GT Road is another popular route for many kanwariyas.
