Delhi is set to become an electric vehicle (EV) hub with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) opening 525 new e-charging stations. The charging stations are being opened near residential areas like apartments, group housing societies, and crowded places like hospital-colleges, institutional buildings, grocery stores, shops, malls, and cafeterias. The charging stations will offer both fast and slow charging facility and the charging fee will be around three rupees per unit.
Under the policy made by the MCD, one e-charging and battery swapping station is being built at a distance of every three kilometers. So far, a total of 167 e-charging stations have been opened where there is a facility to charge 6 to 10 vehicles simultaneously. Along with the MCD, 11 companies are engaged in setting up e-charging stations. Eight Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and three Power Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) are also working with the corporation.
The corporation officials stated that maximum charging stations are being opened around cafeterias. With the introduction of these new charging stations, EV owners will have access to charging facilities within a radius of barely three kilometers around them, making it convenient for them to use their vehicles without worrying about running out of power.
