Maruti Suzuki Ordered to Refund Price of Car due to Faulty Airbag

Maruti Suzuki, the leading car manufacturer in India, has been directed by the Consumer Commission in Kerala to refund the price of a car to a customer. The order was issued after the car owner claimed that the airbag did not deploy during an accident.

Subsequent investigation confirmed this allegation, leading to the decision. Despite being the top-selling car brand in India, Maruti Suzuki has struggled to gain the same level of trust as competitors Tata and Mahindra when it comes to safety ratings.

Details of the Case

The order was passed by the Malappuram District Consumer Commission in response to a complaint filed by Mohammed Musliyar, a resident of Malappuram district. Musliyar stated that he was involved in an accident on June 30, 2021, where he sustained serious injuries.
The vehicle was severely damaged in the incident. The complaint alleged that the airbag did not deploy due to a manufacturing fault, leading to the injuries.

Heavy Fine Imposed on Maruti Suzuki

The motor vehicle inspector also confirmed that the airbag did not function during the accident. As a result, the Consumer Commission ordered Maruti Suzuki to refund the customer Rs 4,35,854, which is the value of the vehicle, along with an additional Rs 20,000 as litigation cost.

The commission warned that if the order is not complied with within a month, an interest rate of 9 percent will be charged on the refund amount.

This case highlights the importance of car manufacturers ensuring the proper functioning of safety features like airbags. It also serves as a reminder for consumers to prioritize safety ratings and thoroughly research a car’s safety features before making a purchase decision.
