India Continues to Battle Monsoon and Flooding
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in several states of India, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and northern Bengal. The monsoon season has caused significant flooding in these regions.
Floodwaters are receding in some areas of Punjab and Haryana, but the water levels of rivers such as the Yamuna, Beas, Sutlej, Ravi, and Ghaggar remain high, raising concerns of further flooding if heavy rain occurs in the Himalayas.
Uttarakhand remains on an orange alert until July 18, with the Shimla weather office predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in 10 districts. The forecast warns of potential damage to crops, fruit plants, and new plantings, as well as the risk of landslides, flash floods, mudslides, and swollen rivers.
In Bihar, relentless rainfall in Nepal and the state has caused the water levels of several rivers to rise. A road diversion in Araria was washed away, leading to traffic disruptions on NH-327E.
The heavy downpours have resulted in several fatalities. Bihar reported 17 deaths due to lightning strikes, while two girls were swept away by flash floods in J&K’s Kathua district.
The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated, with over 100,000 people affected. Excess water released from dams in Bhutan has submerged several villages, and the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are dangerously close to breaching the danger level.
Landslides along the Badrinath route in Uttarakhand disrupted traffic temporarily, and Tehri, Dehradun, and Haridwar districts have been put on high alert.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the heavy rain and flooding. Himachal Pradesh claims to have evacuated all stranded tourists, while Punjab and Haryana are providing relief and assistance to affected people. Medical camps have been set up to prevent water and vector-borne diseases.
The overflowing Ghaggar river continues to wreak havoc in Punjab’s Sangrur district, and authorities are initiating an evacuation plan in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district.
In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has assessed the flood situation and directed officials to provide assistance to those affected by the overflowing rivers.
Odisha has placed 11 districts under an orange alert due to a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, resulting in heavy rainfall.
As the monsoon season persists, the affected states remain on high alert, with a focus on rescue and relief operations and restoring normalcy in the rain-battered regions.
