Mahindra & Mahindra, the largest utility vehicle manufacturer in India, is set to launch a longer, more practical version of its popular Thar off-roader. Here are the latest updates on the upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar:
1. Global Debut in South Africa: The new Mahindra Thar 5-door will be unveiled on August 15th, 2023, in South Africa.
2. No Launches This Year: According to Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto & Farm Sector) at Mahindra & Mahindra, the Thar 5-door will not be released this calendar year. It is scheduled for a 2024 launch.
3. Equipped with a Sunroof: Top-spec models of the upcoming Thar 5-door SUV will feature a single-pane electric sunroof, which is expected to boost sales.
4. Same Engines as the 3-Door Thar: The 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from the Thar 3-door will also be available in the 5-door Thar. Both manual and automated gearboxes will be compatible with these engines.
5. 2WD Thar in the Works: Mahindra is reportedly developing a 2WD version of the 5-door Thar to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The company aims to target a larger practical car segment with this offering.
The Thar 5-door is expected to have an elongated wheelbase and a pair of extra doors in the middle to better suit the practicality of Indian buyers. With the launch of this new variant, Mahindra hopes to attract more buyers who are currently leaning towards the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
The Thar 3-door, launched on August 15th, 2020, has since remained one of the company’s most popular SUVs in the country. However, the waiting period for the rear-wheel drive Thar has significantly increased, and the company aims to ramp up production to meet the demand.
