Delhi University receives over 245,000 applications for undergraduate admissions
Delhi University concluded the second phase of its undergraduate admission process with a record-breaking number of applications. According to officials, a total of 245,239 students have applied for a spot in the prestigious institution this year.
This year’s figure marks a significant increase from the 217,653 applications received last year, representing a 12.7% surge. Officials attribute this rise to a larger number of students taking the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which DU is now using for admissions.
Most Popular Colleges
- Kirori Mal College: 161,533 applications
- Hindu College: 158,548 applications
- Hansraj College: 157,162 applications
- Ramjas: 156,068 applications
It’s important to note that students were allowed to apply to multiple colleges through DU’s Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal, leading to multiple applications from the same student.
Other popular colleges include Sri Venkateswara College, Dyal Singh College, and Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College.
DU will now begin the process of determining how many candidates will be admitted out of the total 245,239 applicants. Last year, the university admitted only 65,000 students.
The administration will assign simulated ranks to candidates, which will determine their admission to specific colleges based on their preferences and merit scores. The CSAS portal will lock students’ preferences on July 27, and the simulated ranks will be released on July 29.
The third phase of the admission process will commence on August 1, which will involve seat allotment and admissions based on candidates’ college-course preferences. Candidates must accept their seats by August 4.
This year, the most popular programs among applicants were BCom, BCom (Hons), BA (Hons) English, and BA (Hons) political science.
Despite being renowned institutions, colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), and Miranda House did not make it to the top 10 preferred colleges. Officials attribute this to the limited number of courses or subject combinations offered by these colleges, as well as the fact that LSR and Miranda House are women’s colleges.
Anju Srivastava, principal of Hindu College, expressed her satisfaction with the high number of applicants, stating, “It’s good to know we have a high number of students applying… My immediate reaction is that this is probably because we offer a wide range of courses catering to students of Humanities, Commerce, and Science streams.”
The majority of applicants (80.93%) this year come from schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Delhi recorded the highest number of applications with 88,036, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 55,685 and Haryana with 23,442.
