In a much-needed infrastructure boost, the bustling markets of Kashmiri Gate and Moti Gate in old Delhi are set to receive modern smart street lights, ending years of poor visibility and safety concerns. The project, approved under Chief Minister Street Light Scheme Phase-4, aims to transform the dark, congested alleys of these historic markets into well-lit, safer zones for traders and shoppers.
The areas have long been plagued by low lighting, leading to difficulties in both commercial activity and security enforcement. The Delhi government, through this initiative, will install energy-efficient LED street lights with smart monitoring systems in narrow inner lanes as well as on the outer roads.
Local Traders Welcome the Move, Say It Will Help Business and Public Safety
According to Vivek Narang, an office-bearer of the Kashmiri Gate Market Traders Association, the lack of adequate lighting has made it unsafe for people to walk even during early evening hours. “This move is a big relief for traders, shopkeepers, and visitors. A well-lit market means more footfall and better safety,” he said.
The traders also noted that rising thefts and mishaps in dimly lit areas were hurting business and customer confidence. With this development, night-time shopping and evening logistics are expected to improve significantly.
Smart Poles to Be Equipped with Sensors and Cameras for Better Monitoring
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Government will jointly implement the project using smart poles that include motion sensors, CCTV integration, and auto-dimming features to conserve energy while improving security.
Officials confirmed that the survey and groundwork have already begun, and the installation work is expected to begin in phases over the next few weeks. The lights will be centrally monitored using the latest IoT-based technology, ensuring minimum outages and faster maintenance.
Wider Impact Expected Across Walled City Areas
Kashmiri Gate and Moti Gate are among the oldest and busiest trading zones in the Walled City. The success of this project may serve as a model for replicating similar efforts in Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, and Ballimaran, where lighting issues persist.
