Increase in Dearness Allowance for Karnataka Government Employees and Pensioners

The new Congress government in Karnataka has announced an increase in the dearness allowance (DA) of all state government employees and pensioners from 31% to 35%. The decision was made by the Siddaramaiah cabinet and is effective from January 1, 2023.

The hike in DA has brought great relief to lakhs of government employees and pensioners in the state. Earlier, government employees had gone on strike demanding an increase in DA. The government’s official statement said that the rates of DA payable to state government employees in the revised pay scale of 2018 will increase from 31% to 35% of the basic pay.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has assured the people of the state that the government is committed to fulfilling all the promises made ahead of the assembly elections. The Congress had promised to implement ‘five guarantees’ in its manifesto, including free electricity, monthly assistance for female heads of households, free rice for BPL households, financial assistance for unemployed youth, and free bus travel for women.

The Congress had registered a thumping victory in the recently held assembly elections in Karnataka, winning 135 seats and regaining power. The BJP won only 66 seats and had to be thrown out of power.

Overall, the increase in DA is a positive step taken by the new government in Karnataka towards fulfilling its promises and providing relief to government employees and pensioners.
