Kanda Express Delivers 1400 Tons Of Onions From Nashik To Delhi To Stabilize Market Prices.

Kanda Express Delivers Onions to Delhi

The Kanda Express, a dedicated goods train, is set to arrive at Kishanganj station in Delhi this Sunday, transporting approximately 1400 tonnes of onions from Nashik. This shipment is part of a larger effort to ensure a steady supply of onions to meet the high demand in Delhi. Prior to this, two other rakes of the Kanda Express have already made their way to the city, with the first arriving on October 20 and the second bringing 1333 tonnes on November 14. Rail transport has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective method for moving onions across regions, helping to stabilize prices in the market.

Support for Onion Farmers

This initiative significantly benefits onion farmers in the Nashik region by providing them with additional revenue through the bulk transportation of their produce. By shifting to rail transportation, not only are consumers gaining access to more stable onion prices, but cooperatives are also enjoying a more economical alternative compared to road transport. The introduction of the Shetkari Samriddhi program by the Railways aims to facilitate the direct transport of perishable goods from farmers, further enhancing the availability of onions in urban markets like Delhi. Another train is currently being loaded in Nashik, which will also carry 1400 tonnes of onions, indicating a robust supply chain.

Government Efforts to Control Prices

In response to rising onion prices, the Consumer Affairs Ministry initiated the Kanda Express service in October to address the needs of cities with high onion demand, including Delhi, Lucknow, and Guwahati. Initially planning to run just three rakes, the success of the program led to an increase in the number of trains. Each Kanda Express can transport the equivalent of 53 trucks or about 1600 metric tons of onions at a significantly lower cost. Currently, onions are being sold at government stalls for Rs 35 per kilogram, while retail prices range between Rs 55 and Rs 80. The government’s efforts aim to undermine black marketers, who have contributed to the inflated prices by hoarding stock, ensuring that consumers can access onions at fair prices.
