Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani slams BCCI for empty stadium at World Cup match
Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the empty stadium during Thursday’s World Cup match in Ahmedabad. Mevani referred to the situation as a ‘fiasco’ and accused the BCCI of lacking transparency in the ticketing process.
Allegations of free tickets for women by BJP
- Reports claimed that 40,000 tickets were offered free of cost to women by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to celebrate the passage of the women’s reservation bill.
- Mevani pointed out that the ticket sales were over by the first week of September, while the bill was passed after that, questioning the source of the additional tickets for women.
Claims of misleading information and low turnout
- Mevani alleged that cricket fans were kept in the dark and that women were misled with false information, including the idea that it was an India-Pakistan match, in an attempt to fill the stadium.
- Despite the distribution of free tickets and snack coupons, women did not turn up for the match.
Explanation for the empty stadium
According to an official, the Ahmedabad stadium appeared empty because of its size and the absence of the Indian team in the match. The ground can hold up to 130,000 spectators, but only 47,000 were expected on the first day.
Unverified video circulating
An unverified video is circulating in which some women claim that they received free tickets from BJP members and were told that it was an India-Pakistan match.
Jignesh Mevani concluded by urging the BCCI to prioritize cricket as a gentleman’s game and eliminate politics, warning that the sport could be in peril if it continues.
