**India-China Relationship Downturn Created by Beijing, Says Jaishankar**
– External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the current downturn in India-China relations was caused by China and not by India.
– Jaishankar made these remarks while delivering the Shyama Prasad Lecture on ‘New India and the World’ in Kolkata.
– He emphasized that the downturn in ties was created by China when it violated agreements made in 1993 and 1996 on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
– Jaishankar mentioned that China needs to observe the agreements and stop trying to unilaterally change the status quo for a decent relationship.
– He also highlighted that ties between major countries work only when they are based on mutual interest, sensitivity, and respect.
– The minister stressed that China must have the belief in a workable relationship for it to work.
– On the issue of Pakistan and terrorism, Jaishankar stated that India cannot have a normal relationship with Pakistan until it stops engaging in acts of terrorism.
– He sent a clear message that India will not tolerate a situation where cross-border terrorism continues.
– Jaishankar mentioned that India has made persistent efforts to mobilize the international community to delegitimize terrorism.
– He highlighted that there is now widespread understanding that terrorism is not just a threat to India but to the world as a whole.
– Regarding the Kashmir issue, Jaishankar criticized Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s handling of the situation, stating that it had a long-term impact on Indian diplomacy.
– He mentioned that leaving Pakistan Occupied Kashmir allowed a contiguity to develop between two adversarial nations, which is now costing India.
– Jaishankar also spoke about striking the right balance between ties with Russia and the United States.
– He emphasized that India’s relationships should not be seen as a zero-sum game and that strong ties with Russia should not hinder a strong relationship with the US.
– The minister stated that India’s credibility as the voice of the global south and its technological relevance are important for the developed world.
– Jaishankar concluded by saying that the Russia relationship is geopolitically driven and insulated from the ups and downs of regular politics.
