According to police, Nargis is a student of Kamala Nehru College. She had come to the park with her distant cousin, Irfan, who has been arrested for allegedly murdering Nargis.
Police said Irfan wanted to get married to Nargis but the girl’s family refused as he did not have a job. After turning down the proposal, Nargis stopped talking to Irfan.
“The boy was disturbed after the marriage broke off and the girl stopped taking his calls and would not talk to him. That is why he killed her,” says Chandan Chowdhary, South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, took note of the incident and tweeted, “In a posh locality like Malviya Nagar, a girl was beaten to death with a rod. Delhi is extremely unsafe. It doesn’t matter to anyone. Only in newspaper reports, the names of girls are changed, and the crimes do not stop.”
