Investigation into Gurugram Underpass Crack Case
The investigation regarding the crack in the Atul Kataria Chowk underpass in Gurugram has been assigned to retired scientist Satendra Kumar from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI). He will be evaluating the condition of the underpass and suggesting repair methods. Kumar is expected to visit the site next week to collect samples, which will then be sent to laboratories for analysis. The Public Works Department (PWD) expects to receive the report within 20 to 25 days.
Background of the Issue
On January 14, a news report highlighted the significant cracks that have developed in the cemented road of the underpass, which was built at a cost of crores. It was mentioned that the contractor had applied a coal tar solution to mask the cracks. This underpass was constructed by the PWD at the expense of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
Actions Taken
Following the report, the CEO of GMDA, Shyamal Mishra, instructed Chief Engineer Arun Dhankhar to investigate the issue. Dhankhar has requested a response from Superintendent Engineer Praveen Chaudhary of PWD. Subsequently, Executive Engineer Charandeep Rana has assigned the investigation to the retired CRRI scientist.
Concerns Raised
Local residents have expressed concerns about negligence on part of the contractor and the authorities. Rakesh Rana, head of Sai Kunj RWA, and Dinesh Vashistha, former head of Sector-Five RWA, criticized the application of coal tar over the cracks, suggesting it was merely a temporary fix.
Underpass Details
The construction of the underpass cost approximately ₹48 crore and connects Sheetla Mata Road to Maharana Pratap Chowk. It was opened for traffic in 2022, inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Manohar Lal.
Current Condition
Additionally, there are reports of garbage accumulating inside the underpass, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road, which raises safety concerns. Residents have alerted the PWD and Municipal Corporation about this issue, but no action has been taken so far.
