New Delhi: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is all set to expand its international network by starting direct flight services to six new destinations in Africa and Central Asia this year. The budget carrier will connect Mumbai to Kenya, Nairobi, and Jakarta by the end of July or the first week of August, according to PTI. The airline will also start flight services from Delhi to Tbilisi, Georgia, and Baku in August, followed by services to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Almaty in Kazakhstan in September.
Here are the key highlights of IndiGo’s international expansion plans:
– IndiGo will launch 174 new weekly international flights, including new destinations and routes, between June and September.
– Daily services from Delhi to Hong Kong will resume in August after being suspended three years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
– With the commencement of flight services on these new routes, IndiGo will be able to connect 26 out of a total of 32 international destinations.
– The airline’s CEO, Peter Albers, said that IndiGo is working on a strategy to take it to new heights and cross new frontiers, making it easier for people in India to travel to their destinations.
IndiGo’s expansion plans come at a time when the airline industry is showing signs of recovery from the pandemic-induced slowdown. The airline had reported a net loss of Rs 1,147.2 crore for the January-March quarter, compared to a loss of Rs 870.8 crore in the same period last year. However, the airline’s passenger traffic grew by 28.5% in the same quarter, indicating a gradual return to normalcy.
IndiGo’s move to expand its international network will provide a boost to India’s aviation sector, which has been hit hard by the pandemic. The airline’s low-cost model and efficient operations have made it a popular choice for Indian travelers, and the new routes will provide more options for those looking to travel abroad.
